No you didn't miss much really. We fielded a very weak makeshift side due to
the amount of pull outs but by all accounts Japans side was a weak one
too.Was fairly even for 80 mins then we just collapsed.AAnd the usual pish
from the commentary team of hearing 80 mins of "Well a 0-0 is what we
thought it would be and not a bad result" soon after followed by the "Well
we can take alot from the game".We have seemed to take lots or learned from
games for 12 or so years and im wondering when the learning will actually
evolve into anything!

Do have to say the Japanese fans were superb, non stop singing all the way
through the game from start to finish.Only down side is they only seem to
know two songs (One was the entertainer and the other im not sure, might be
ode to joy) so did get a bit annoying, but cant fault their enthusiasm.

Unfortunately I caught the game on the basis of your post. You know, I
would say thanks jonbhoy. If I'd meant it. But that must have been the
most pointless game of football in football history. Ending up
watching the battle of naesby in the long spells of inaction....

My mood was not lightened by the commentary team. Patterson is ok but
he is completely biased in favour of scotland, it's beyond
credibility. If it's a foul for Japan, you might as well just come out
and say so, instead of "well that one wasn;t so clear"....and the
other commentator...BEJESUS!!!...who the hell is that
guy?!?!?!....he's f*ckin terrible as a commentator.....he's got a
terrible voice, talks endless pish and seems to know little about
football....

The one bright light during the match was the singing of the
Japanese....pretty impressive....until I realised they were endlessly
singing the one song, like you say....that started to grate as
well....i mean "change the f*ckin record please!!!!"

I kept thinking, any team that can't put at least 3 past this Scotland side
at home has no business anywhere near a World Cup and had to fucking guffaw
when the guy said that the Japanese coach was targetting a top four finish.
On the basis of that game, they'll be lucky to finish in the top four of the
first group stage.

imho there are only 3 commentators of any class now. Archie, Jock Brown and
David Begg on Radio Scotland - the best of the lot.

it got to the stage where I turned the commentary off - if there's one way
to have a game ruined it's to have to listen to the same stupid bloody tune
for ten minutes at a time. The other way is of course for Scotland to turn
up.

But if you think that was bad - wait until you watch games from SouthAfrica.
The crowds there are *seriously* annoying.

Ok i might be a killjoy but i just dont think musical instruments, bells etc
should have any place in a stadium. No problem with the singing its just as
already has been said it can irritate the fuck out of you.Theres one usually
on soccer saturday (think its Blackpool) and theres a few drum guys right
beside the commentary guy and you can see he wants to just turn around and
tell them to fuck off.

David Begg is indeed the best of the lot. He has a great voice, and
easily characterises the drama of any great game. He has amazing
stamina, and can often keep his commentory at a high pitch for
substantial periods of time. He's well researched, with interesting
and relevant stats. Importantly he has good judgement when calling
decisions. A calm and objective minamalism of commentory, which is
often marked for what is not mentioned, rather than what is. He's also
gracious to the other presenters without sounding overly patronising
or condasending. Which is a difficult job when you've got chick young
in the studio.

Why the hell this man is not on TV completely escapes me! Although
maybe we should just keep him for the radio, where the breadth and
depth of his talents are on display for all...

I think TV commentary is a different animal. Radio commenatry has to
describe what they listener can't see; TV commentary is more about filling
in the space between what we can see. Begg is world class on the radio,
doesn't mean he'd be the same on TV - although he might be.

Worst commentator on Radio? Alan Green by a country mile - he is truly

I used to like Green. He seemed to have abit of oomph in his
commentory...but he started taking the piss out of Celtic fans who
would phone up five live and insist Henke was world class "Oh but he
plays in the SPL, how can you tell?". Green would dismiss this in a
very charmless way. Nowadays Green really thinks he's the bee's
knee's. He'll take risks while others would display abit of caution
and common sense. I think he's just a big gas bag ..

Other awful commentators: I feckin hate Radio Scotlands "open all
mic's" so that means pretty much everyone that has ever said "Wow! Oh
big action at the New Love Street"...or "Amazing! Something actually
happened at Fir Park!!!"...take the lot of them out and shoot them...

Now I'm starting to rant I'd like to also mention, altho he is on TV,
Clive Tyldsly...he's a cunt....actually Clive is a fuckin cunt...

I like the discussion they have on Radio Scotland more generally. I
feel that open all mic's is a feable attempt to sound more
contemporary and with it...like Sky Sports News has 40 different
pieces of information on the screen at the one time...Radio Scotland
will have 40 different commentary games at the one time....just stick
to talking about the one bloody thing, please!

Gordon is ok. He's organised and has a fine eye for detail. But he has
little carisma. While I would let him do my tax returns and I wouldn't
want to go for a pint with him...

he is completely biased in favour of scotland, it's beyond
credibility. If it's a foul for Japan, you might as well just come out
and say so, instead of "well that one wasn;t so clear"....and the
other commentator...BEJESUS!!!...who the hell is that
guy?!?!?!....he's f*ckin terrible as a commentator.....he's got a
terrible voice, talks endless pish and seems to know little about
football....
imho there are only 3 commentators of any class now. Archie, Jock Brown and
David Begg on Radio Scotland - the best of the lot.

Begg is world class on the radio,
You fucking havin a laff ?
World class celtc fan you mean
Bheggs near choked on his own vomit at the weekend there when Papac scored
our winner, he is a bitter wee bhoy lovin tit. His bias towards THEM is well
known and that, for me, makes him a piss poor commentator. Radio and TV
commentators are supposed to be impartial and that knob end isn't.

I don't think I have ever heard more of a biased commentary from a so
called impartial broadcaster in my life.
Listen to the passion and delight in his voice when Samuel scores,
then his deflated delivery of both the Boyd and Papac goals.

It starts about 2 mins in. My first thought was get it right up ye ya

Unfortunately I caught the game on the basis of your post. You know, I
would say thanks jonbhoy. If I'd meant it. But that must have been the
most pointless game of football in football history. Ending up
watching the battle of naesby in the long spells of inaction....

My mood was not lightened by the commentary team. Patterson is ok but

seriously?

You're not getting David Begg mixed up with John Barnes (commentator not
mangement flop)? Barnes' every word is tinged with green - but Begg? Never
got any hint of bias from him.
